Oh I wish I was an England fan in sixty six again

And Ramsays team fulfilled the dream and started Englands reign

But that memory fades through these forty years of pain

Throughout those years successive teams proceeded to destroy our dreams

And heroes rose and fell before the final hurdle came

Each time the tabloids speculate that this time we can end the wait

And each time that we don’t they know exactly who to blame

We fell just short in 90 and missed out this year again

For the final games we were packed and on the plane

Oh I wish I was an England fan in sixty six again

But though we lost, the saddest thing?   The hope with which the crowd would sing

Then have to watch their heroes give a passion free display

What I want from an England side above all else is - Play with pride!

You keep three Lions roaring and we’ll back you all the way

The latest generation missed their golden chance to reign

Though the wait goes on, optimistic we remain

I see five million reasons why the soulless Swede could never try

To add some heartfelt passion to our technical display

To him it’s all about the cash. Who gives a damn about panache?

And England are knocked out before they even start to play

The pride when each man raised that cup could not have been more plain

In the years since then all our hopes have been in vain

So now we have to wait again, South Africa in twenty - ten

And England will expect, as England always seems to do

To see St Georges flag unfurled to hail the champions of the world

The dream will still be burning bright – lets hope that dream comes true!
